William Friedkin dirigerà Frankie Machine

Una notizia esaltante che, però, mi garba a metà. Sì, mi rallegra enormemente che un grande come Friedkin trasporrà finalmente per il grande schermo la famosa e celebrata, cupa e “tragica” novella dell’esimio Don Winslow, “L’inverno di Frankie Machine” e che, probabilmente, stando a quanto leggerete sotto, ad adattare la sceneggiatura interverrà lo stesso autore del libro, Winslow appunto, ma al contempo tale “news” mi “preoccupa” perché, come molti di voi si ricorderanno, i diritti per la trasposizione cinematografica eran detenuti, appartenevano a Robert De Niro, il quale, anni fa, quando l’opera di Don uscì nelle librerie, anzi, ancor prima che si “posasse” sugli scaffali, divenendo come sappiamo un bestseller internazionale e pluripremiato, a dirigere il film dovevano occuparsene Martin Scorsese e poi, dopo il “no gentile” di Zio Marty, il maestro Michael Mann.

De Niro, o meglio la sua casa di produzione, la Tribeca, che avrebbe appunto coprodotto il film, dapprincipio, aveva commissionato a Brian Koppelman e David Levien la prima stesura dello script che a De Niro però non piacque. Al che, subentrò proprio il su citato Mann che decise di affidare il lavoro di sceneggiatura ad Alex Tse, “quello” di Watchmen.

Da allora però non son più “filtrate” notizie, niente è più trapelato, buio totale e la trasposizione pareva oramai caduta nel dimenticatoio più obliante.

Ecco che “Deadline”, ieri sera, con nostro forte stupore, ci porta “questa”, che saltar di gioia ci fa quanto mi “costerna” perché Friedkin non fa il nome di De Niro quale protagonista, ma accenna a McConaughey (?!), “suo” attore di Killer Joe.

Ora, secondo il libro, Frankie Machine avrebbe un’età che s’aggira sui sessanta e passa anni, quindi McConaughey, a meno che la sceneggiatura non venga stravolta, mi par(rebbe) già un miscasting assurdo, tanto più che, certamente, non discuto McConaughey performer dopo le sue recenti, strabilianti prove prodigiose ma mi sembra inadatto a ricoprire la parte di un vecchio gangster “revenant” che rispunta dalle tenebre.

Son “ignorante” in merito all’attuale “copyright”, non so dunque se, al momento, De Niro è ancora “padrone” dei diritti cinematografici e/o se li ha ceduti oppure se, a distanza di tempo da quando li acquisì, son scaduti.

Ma, sinceramente, spero che Friedkin scelga BOB come unico e solo possibile, inimitabile Frankie Machine.

Chi altri se non un goodfella storico?

William Friedkin will develop to direct The Winter Of Frankie Machine, an adaptation of the 2007 Don Winslow bestselling novel that once had Martin Scorsese and then Michael Mann attached to direct, and Robert De Niro attached to star. The project, which shook free of Paramount some time ago, hasn’t yet been set up anywhere. They’ll start fresh with a script that Winslow will either write or co-write. This comes after Winslow made a monster Fox deal for his current bestseller The Cartel, which continued the characters from Winslow’s 2006 novel The Power Of The Dog. The commitment to book rights and writing fees was around $6 million and Ridley Scott is aboard to direct a script that is being written by Shane Salerno, who co-wrote one of the Avatar sequels with James Cameron. Fox is courting Leonardo DiCaprio to play DEA agent Art Keller, whose blood feud with Mexican cartel kingpin Adan Berrera fuels a story that covers the start of the war on drugs and brings it to the present. For Winslow, getting Friedkin on his book is a dream. He “made the decision to become a writer after seeing The French Connection,” he said. “That how strong of an impact it had on me.”

While the stakes and the budget of The Cartel will be commensurate with what a studio like Fox spends on an impact film with Scott at the helm, Friedkin tells me he is eager to approach Frankie Machine similar to the way he did Killer Joe, that gritty adaptation of the Tracy Letts play that starred Matthew McConaughey and was one of the indie building blocks that got the actor to his Oscar performance in Dallas Buyers Club, followed by the classic HBO series turn True Detective. Friedkin said he wants to make this down and dirty, on a low budget. While those past Paramount incarnations of Frankie Machinebore budgets in the $70 million range, Friedkin wants to do this for under $15 million. The hope is for it to have the bite and burst of violence in films like Eastern Promises and A History of Violence.
